When my client sent me this I literally gasped out loud when I pulled it out of the box. This is an absolutely spectacular embroidered silk Chinese cape coat from the twenties or even a little earlier. It has a label identifying it as being from a costume company so it may be a piece that was made by them from embroidered silk fabric imported into the west. The label that is in it is also extremely old so I have no doubts that all of the materials originate from the 1920s or even earlier. It's hard to even describe this piece because it's so beautiful. The floral design on it is particularly bright and vivid. It has the most brilliant pops of color that are perfectly offset by the stunning purple silk backdrop. The design that runs over it is a spectacular explosion of flowers and trailing leaves that completely cover the entire piece. The colors are as vibrant as the day it was done and I cannot gush enough about the level of workmanship of the embroidery. If you lay it out flat it's cut in a giant rectangle that split down the centre at the front and slightly offset on a slight angle on one side. This side wraps over the other side and is secured with a button and a series of hook and eye. The sleeves where you put your arm through are created by a tacking of the side seam about halfway down the center. This creates a stunning draped cocoon effect once it's on the body as all of that fabric falls and drapes around you. Black silk highlights the collar and the edge at the bottom. Once on this becomes a kind of hybrid cape … coat .l.. cocoon fabulousness that is literally like wearing a piece of art. I cannot say enough good things about this piece. It is truly a spectacular piece from this time period. Excellent condition

Lined in a matching solid colour version of the same purple silk as the exterior. Completely finished by hand. There's a hidden inside pocket on one side. It closes with a big black satin covered button on one side and hook and eye down the side and collar. I see a well done repair at the back of the neck. It otherwise looks like it's been immaculately stored over the last 100 years. The open cut should allow it to fit just about any size.

It measures 60" from end to end across the top and is 36" wide at the center point. Once on the body drops and drapes to approximately 52" inches at its longest point.

They will be packed exceedingly well and we only sell pieces that will stand up to the stress of shipping, however, having pieces potentially shipped multiple times through multiple customs and countries is too hard on garments that are historically important and deserve to be treated with love and care. This garment has been professionally cleaned, pressed and is odor free. Thoroughly checked over before shipping, it will be ready to wear upon arrival.

  • items less then $500, or that are on sale, require a 50% deposit with the final payment due in two weeks from the date of deposit
