When searching for the date of this dress, we found a runway piece from Fall 2003 that has very similar bead work through the skirt and was shown with a different bodice at the front, but with the same crossed over strap open cut back. I love that you can get an idea of how well it moves by the runway video. It is truly a beautiful and extraordinary dress and a gorgeous example of the work the original Mr. Valentino was doing for his self named label.

I love the bareness at the top of the dress with its bare back and the front draping neckline. It is a dress that really comes alive once on the body. It is very light in weight despite its extensive bead work and sequins that cover the dress. It is all cut on the bias so once you slip it on it just skims over the body. The dress is made from a bias cut black silk chiffon combined with a silk netting. The netted portions are covered with thousands of tiny black sequins and beads in a variety of shapes. A little beaded strap curves up and over the shoulders to criss cross over your bare back. A panel of silk chiffon at the front creates a pretty drape. It skims over the waist and then curves over the hips. The skirt flows to the floor from there and widens out a bit as it nears the hem. It is cut a little longer at the back to give a slate sweeping feel behind you. Panels of silk chiffon run down the back for a little added detail. Excellent condition with a minor note below

Fully lined in a black silk chiffon and closes with a back hidden set zipper. Hand finishes. I see minor missing beads and wear to the back hem and there is a couple small areas where the netting has popped out of the seams a tiny bit. Please see the photos after the label shot. All minor. This is a dress that was made for the shops. While you saw elements of it in some of the pieces that walk the runway for both the Fall 2015 RTW how and the Couture show there was no exact twin to it on the runway. In 2015 Valentino was headed by both Maria Grazia Chiuri and PierPaolo Piccioli. They had stepped into Mr Valentino's shoes and were breathing new life into the brand. Most of the looks towards the middle of the fall show had this same very minimalist feel and were done primarily in black with pops of white. I love how this dress showcases their more simplistic and minimal side. It is an amazing dress. 

The fabric is a silk that is heavy and has an almost fine wool suiting feel to it. The weight of the fabric is what holds the dress in place over you. The front is cut straight across the neckline and then it is brought starkly down the sides and set to sit just over the seam at the waist. This is repeated at the back with an addition of a long open keyhole that displays a slice of bare skin from neck to waist. This creates a rectangular cut out on either side from your shoulder to the waist. If you dare you can wear it bare or you can lay this over top of something. What you put underneath is dependent on how much coverage you want from something with just a tiny strap at to wearing a full on sleeved shirt underneath will work. The waist nips in and and then the skirt falls to the floor or ankle depending on your height. The skirt is what gives the piece its weight. There is an amazing amount of fabric used for the skirt. This is because it is flat pleated all the way around your waist and then each of those pleats open up at about 3 1/2 inches under the waist line to the hem. Inside each the open pleat are four more top stitched knife pleats that gradually open as they reach the hem. The detail that this creates all the way around the skirt when you move is amazing. When you stand still everything falls like a normal pleated skirt but when you move and they start to open and you see all those top stitched inner pleats the entire thing just comes to life. It is these touches and extra details that always make Valentino pieces that much more special. It beautifully executed and even better in person. Excellent condition

Fully lined in a black silk through the bodice and the skirt is unlined. It closes with a button and loop at the back of the neck and a hidden set zipper that starts at the waist. Tagged a modern Valentino 40. It appears to have been worn very little if at all. There is no give at the waist so make sure it is the proper measurement for where it sits because it sits touch low.

Valentino launched his ready-to-wear label in 1962 two years after opening his atelier in Rome. He eventually expanded and added other boutiques. His first New York boutique launched in the fall of 1970 and it caused a sensation. Traffic was backed up 3 blocks with everyone who was anyone trying to get in on opening night. More boutiques followed including one at Bergdorfs. He encouraged his couture clients to also shop in his boutiques. He wanted everyone to have the Valentino experience and noted that he often carried the lines he created for his Couture label into the boutique work. The fabric and construction details were still remarkably close in quality to his couture pieces at this point in time. The line between the two was often blurred and on this set you can see that in the hand finishing that is has. I absolutely love this set. It is gorgeous.

The dress is made out of a black silk that holds its shape and volume beautifully. This is a two piece set made up of a dress and its matching jacket. They are fantastically beautiful worn together but I also love that by having the two pieces it gives you more styling options and you can wear then separately and mix and match with other things you already own. The dress is suspended by two tiny straps that curve up and over each shoulder. A wide set V sits at the front and then it dips lower across at the back to leave a bare expanse of open skin. It is cut to be more fitted to the waist and then under that it is all volume. The skirt has an incredible amount of silk in it that really shows best when you move. The lightness of the silk causes the skirt to billow out and move around you as you move, yet it still has enough weight that it holds that full feeling when you stand still. When this is on and you are walking the effect that this creates is absolutely gorgeous. A full 13" ruffle circles the lower hem and it has been sewn is on top of the skirt and not simple seamed onto the edge. This is a clever technique that leaves fabric inside and behind the skirt and this helps to hold its shape. This uses extra fabric so it's not something you see as much anymore. And it has pockets. The jacket is a thing of beauty in its own right. It widens out from a soft shoulder and curves around and up from the hem to the neckline. I love the tiny ruffled finish that follows the edge. The sleeves are incredible and each is cut to be a wide bell shape. By their ends they are each a full 20" around and the ruffle that finishes each sleeve is a little more then that even. It is absolutely beautiful. This is a stunning Valentino from this time period. Excellent condition.

This dress is the twin of Look 3 for the Pre-Fall 2020 collection. For this collection Pierpaolo paid homage to the Fall 1968 Haute Couture collection and I have included the reference photos of those original pieces here. This famous print was originally done by Mr Valentino and were inspired by the blue and white in Chinese Delft print vases. It is also very close in style to the 2013 Valentino dress that was a part of the in the Met Museums 2015 "China: Through the Looking Glass" exhibit. When speaking of this collection to Vogue Piccioli said; “I want to maintain couture’s values even in the pre-fall collection. I like the idea of breaking its rules and translating them into a modern, spontaneous wardrobe, making something historical become contemporary.” and they went on to mention this print in particular saying that 'he picked from the archives... a beautiful print of Delft blue vases from a sophisticated 1968 couture collection. “I want Valentino to be lively and joyous,” enthused Piccioli. “For me, beauty means life, emotion, something that vibrates and is full of energy—not something removed that you look at from afar, as if on a pedestal.” Mary Holland wore its twin to a premier that season as well. It is beautiful and very special.

The dress is pristine and utterly beautiful. It is made of a feather light silk organza that has been printed with that beautiful blue and white design that gives a nod do the 1968 couture collection as described above. It is magical. The colour combines the soft ivory backdrop with that dreamy blue floral print. The print is beautiful and intricate. I love how he has placed the print over the bodice and skirt to accentuate the design and flow of the dress. The silk is feather light in weight and just floats beautifully over the body once on. It will softly move with the slightest breeze or movement on your part. The dress has a second layer of organza through the bodice and skirt which gives it just a touch less transparency and also helps to add to the airy and light feel that it has. The sleeves are a single layer of silk so you see your arm through the pattern. The neckline has a small neat collar and it buttons to close done the bodice with hidden set buttons. Note how careful the patterns has been lined up across the panel there. The bodice lightly skims over you to the nipped in waist. Each sleeve ends in a beautiful ruffles cuff. The skirt is spectacular. It is lazy gathered through the waist scene and then opens up to be very full to the floor. Because of the layering of the organza with the outer layer in the inner layer, it just floats and moves around you spectacularly when you move. It a just gorgeous and even better in person as you get more of a sense of the lightness of that stunning printed silk. It appears to have been worn very little if at all. Excellent condition

I sold a pink sleeved version of this dress in the past and was very pleased to find this strapless green one. These dresses were not runway pieces and were produced for the shops as a special series in limited quantities. I had showed you the runway pic that is also presented here because it was the closest thing to the pleat work on the dress and at least give you an idea of how the skirt falls once on the body. Fall 2019 was a wild success. The Vogue review for this collection touched on Pier Paolos's inspiration for the show saying; "(he is) a man on an intuitive mission to place fashion on a positive plane. 'I feel that people are looking for emotion and dreams—but not distant dreams,' he said today before his ready-to-wear show was about to take to the runway. 'I want to create a community for Valentino. I mean something different from ‘lifestyle,’ which is about owning objects. It’s about people who share values.'” Every piece he does is special and this dress is no exception.

I love this dress. It feels thoroughly Valentino. When you add in that spectacular floral print that covers the entire side and length of the skirt it is just a joy. The dress is made from a fine and very light weight cotton that has been finished to have a slight sheen so that it looks at first glance to be a silk. It has a touch of transparency to it and I think he choose a cotton over a silk as it hold the soft pleat work far better then a silk would. I know from the previous dress that I sold that had its original hang tags that the cotton was spun in such a way that it may have variations in it. There was also a tag on that previous dress that said to maintain the plisse effect that dress has you were to wring it to compress the pleats after cleaning. I love that Valentino goes to these lengths and uses such natural fabrics. It is part of what makes the exceptional quality of his pieces. The lightness of the cotton combined with that soft open pleating is what lets it move so beautifully over the body once it is on. When you walk, the fabric of the skirt catches the air and billows out around you. The body of the dress is done in a deep moss green and is has soft variations of that colour  in it. The skirt of the dress has been finished to look like it was hand painted. There is a huge abstract painting effect that trails over the side of the skirt and down the length of it that has been done to suggest a field of flowers. It is actually screened onto the fabric yet it somehow feels as if it is hand painted into it. The dress is strapless and it is fitted over the bust and then brought in at the waist with a seam. The fabric is set vertically over the bust and there is an inner lightly boned bodice made out of an almost startling coral silk chiffon whose colour peeks through the exterior cotton very slightly. The skirt falls from that seam under the bust to the floor in a sweeping expanse of fabric. There is a very deep ruffle that is attached to the hem of the lower skirt for even more volume there. The skirt is cut beautifully and gradually widens out as it nears the hem. There are yards of fabric in the skirt and the pleats expand to give it a floating effect as it moves with you. The precision in cut to have this all fall and move so beautifully should not be underestimated. It appears to have never been worn or worn very little. Excellent condition

Lined through the bodice in a coral cotton and an inner chiffon, lightly boned bodice piece. The skirt is lined in a light white cotton. The dress closes with a hidden set side zipper and the inner bodice also zips to close. You can see the hand tied stitches inside the bodice to hold the pleating in place. Tagged a Valentino 40.

A dress from the Haute Couture collection that season also had a bodice with a similar feel that this dress has. We have included both of those references for you here. I love that you can get an idea of how well it moves by the runway video and I think that this dress is even better than the one that walked the runway that season. It is truly a beautiful and extraordinary dress and a gorgeous example of the work the original Mr. Valentino was doing for his label.

This is one of the most beautiful Valentino dresses I have ever seen in all of my years of doing this. It is very light in weight and feels like a dream on the body. The dress is suspended from silk straps that have rows of tiny black seed beads covering them. More seed beads detail the upper and lower edges of the bodice. Between those are an extraordinarily beautiful floral pattern that combines a dense design of sequins and beads. These are set on a black net so all of the space is between the floral pattern has a slight transparency once it is on the body. The way that the beads and sequins have been applied give it a slight 3D feel that I love. The waist is detailed with a gathered panel of silk chiffon and he has added a little band of silk ribbon over that that ties in a sweet little knot at the front. The skirt falls from under the bottom of the band at the waist and it is a work of art. Six tiers of silk chiffon cascade down the skirt to the floor. Each tier gets wider as it near the bottom of the dress and each tier is finished with a black silk border that has been set along the edge of each ruffle. The way that the edging has been sewn onto the silk chiffon is what creates these beautiful little ruffles all the way around you. It is genius. The movement that this gives when the dress is on the body and you move is magical to see. It is just one of those dresses that when you see it, you know it is so very special. I can't rave about it enough. Excellent condition.

This is what I believe is a later re-issue version of Westwood's famous 1991 leopard jacket. The original was longer and a slightly lighter colour and this one is a more car length / pea coat feel. I think that this might be the more wearable option overall and it is an easy way to get that look without the many thousands of dollar price tag that the original has now. The one I have today was well loved and worn and this has given it a great vintage patina. The collar is notched and rounded to frame the neck. It closes down the front with a series of orb embossed buttons. Flap pocket sit on each hip and the sleeves are long. It comes in at the waist and then flares out around the hips. Extra fabric is built in at the back so you get a bit of extra flare there. It is a classic Westwood piece. Great overall condition with notes below. 

Fully lined in an orb embossed fabric and closes down the front with three buttons. Some of the faux fur has matted and shows wear near the edges here and there. We shot some areas to see. The worst is under the pockets flaps which you of course do not see when it is on. It presents great. Tagged a vintage Westwood 1.

This is a great Vivienne Westwood faux leopard coat from her Anglomania line from the late 1990s to 2000s time period. She made some of the best faux fur pieces and I am always on the look out to snag one. They were loved and worn so to find one in such great condition as this one is a treat. It is very well made and the faux fur is of very good quality. The leopard print has a fabulous sense of depth and texture and I love that the colours  on this one are a real tawny soft blend rather then the stronger, more orange toned pieces you often see. The fabric gives the coat just enough weight so that the lines are held perfectly when it is on but doesn't make it feel too heavy or unwieldy. The leopard print acts like a neutral in that you can pair it with pretty much anything and any colour. It closes with an offset row of buttons down the front and then there are two buttons placed high on the other side for contrast. The sleeves are long and the cut through the body has a bit of a pea coat feel to it with the waist area brought in a touch. The collar is notched and there are pockets at the side to slip your hands into. It flares out as it reaches the hem and at the back there is a distinctive flaring swag of fabric that is quite fabulous. Excellent condition

This set is from Spring 2002 and it is fabulous. On the runway this print was shown throughout the first part of the show and the jacket and pant that make up the set were shown separately. I love that this gives you some styling ideas when you don't want to wear them together as the full set. The book Versace:Catwalk noted that Donatella's "graphic floral prints echoed Andy Warhol's multi huge floral paintings as did the backdrop". I love that.

This two piece set combines a beautifully cut jacket with pants that are beaded from the knee down. I always love a suit because of the ability this gives you to mix and match the pieces with things you already own. The incredible floral print give the suit this incredible rock 'n' roll feel. The jacket is tailored with a sleek cut that follows the curves of the body. It has no collar and the sleeves are long with a notch opening up each wrist. A series of tightly spaced, hidden set, hook and eye close the jacket at the front. It comes in at the waist a touch for shape and is meant to follow the curves of the body, but without being too tight. The floral print that covers the jacket is spectacular to see. The fabric of the jacket is an almost canvas feeling cotton mix with a slight texture that gives the perfect backdrop to the print. The pants are made of a super light in weight stretch fabric that lets the pants hug the body like a second skin. There is a small band at the waist that is meant to flip inwards and then nothing else to break the eye as they fall in a fairly straight boot cut to the floor. From about the knee down the floral print is covered in matching coloured beads and sequins. These catch the light terrifically as you move. It is fabulous and a great little piece of fashion history. Excellent condition

The jacket is lined in an ivory Versace logo embossed fabric and hooks to close at the front. The pants are unlined and close with a back zipper. Padding in each shoulder of the jacket. Both pieces appear to have been worn very little if at all. The pants are tagged a 42 and the jacket has no size tag present. The hips of the pants have some stretch and the comfortable range is given in the measurements below.
